Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated Ankara’s desire to join SAFE, the EU’s defense financing mechanism, during a visit to Finland on Tuesday.
This was reported by “European Pravda” with reference to NTV.
After meeting with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, Fidan touched upon the topic of relations between the European Union and Turkey at a press conference.
“Turkey’s inclusion in the EU security mechanism, primarily the SAFE mechanism, is a positive step,” he said.
The Turkish foreign minister also called on the EU to approach bilateral relations “from a long-term and realistic perspective.”
We will recall that this is the Security for Europe (SAFE) program worth 150 billion euros – a mechanism aimed at strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities.
Although Turkey is technically eligible to access the SAFE initiative, it requires the consent of all 27 EU members, and Greece is threatening to block the decision.
